Gotham season 2 episode 5 focused on the tension growing between Penguin and Galavan, and the history of Galavan’s motives. Now that we know a bit more, it appears the show is slowly revealing the dark history of Gotham City, a history that involves the Court of Owls! So let’s discuss Gotham season 2 episode 5!
This episode continued to focus on Theo Galavan and his war against Gotham City. So his plan is to force Penguin to be his slave and do his dirty work for him. This is where Firefly comes in. We haven’t seen much of Selina this season so far, but it appears that her and Firefly will be teaming up.
Selina caring about a troubled girl is quite normal for her. Selina may do horrible things sometimes, but she will always try to help girls she feels are in trouble. So it was good to see more of that side to her this episode.
The GCPD are, as per usual, having difficulty dealing with the chaos Galavan is bringing to Gotham. I mean they don’t even know he’s behind it yet! I feel like we’ve seen Gordon get suckered by a lot of bad guys in Gotham. Hopefully he figures out what Galavan is up to before he helps Galavan ruin Gotham.
Speaking of Galavan we finally know about his family’s past. In classic Gotham tradition his motivations stem from a ridiculous history that involves a family member getting their hand cut off and being exiled from Gotham because he fell for the wrong girl.
Gotham has always been the home of crazy elite people, so this history for the city isn’t very surprising. And it’s clearly setting up the Court of Owls.
As Comicbook.com mentioned, one of the names listed was Crowne, which is from Scott Snyder’s Court of Owls story. Basically the Court of Owls breed assassins called Talons, to help the elite Gotham families run Gotham through manipulation and dominance. The first Talon was William Cobb and he was a poor boy who fell for a rich girl, a Crowne girl. The Crowne girl ended up having a child who ended up being the ancestor of Dick Grayson!
A lot happens in the Court of Owls story, but what you need to know is that Theo and his war will probably reveal the Court of Owls. We saw that the elite families of Gotham all hung out with each other back in the day, so I’m sure they also hung out whilst creating the Court of Owls.
And with the history of Theo’s family revealed, we know why he hates the Waynes. I mean fair enough, they seemed like real dicks back in the day. Perhaps Thomas Wayne’s pre-Batcave has something to do with his family’s past.
Theo plans on killing Bruce Wayne. Now there isn’t much dramatic tension to that considering we know Bruce won’t die, but I guess it’ll be interesting to see how it all goes down.
Also what was with all the talk about Fish Mooney this episode? We never saw her body, so she could still be alive. I’m guessing we might see the return of Fish Mooney in Gotham. If it’s only for a couple of episodes then I’m fine with it, but I feel like the show has been stronger without her.
Overall Gotham season 2 episode 5 was a bit of slower moving episode, but it did reveal some important plot information. Definitely looking forward to seeing the reveal of Court of Owls!
