Gotham 2×01 Breakdown: Welcome back to the weird world of Gotham

gotham season 2 episode 1 breakdown

Gotham season 2 episode 1 marked the return for the show and gave us an interesting idea of what’s to come in season 2. The best way to describe the future of Gotham season 2 is that it’s going to be really weird and dark!

Spoilers follow.

First let’s talk about Jim Gordon. He’s been demoted, and hating it and eventually gets fired. Why? Because of the dodgy Commissioner Loeb. So what does he do? Goes to Penguin of course! Penguin has taken over Falcone’s position so of course he has a lot of power, but Gordon apparently still hasn’t learnt not to make deals with the devil.

Of course at first he’s hesitant about doing Penguin’s dirty work (which is wise), but then he lets himself basically get bitch slapped by good old Brucie boy. Bruce tells Jim that he’s letting his ego get in the way of greater justice, and for some reason Jim takes the advice of a kid and ends up doing Penguin’s dirty work.

So now Jim is back to being detective, and Loeb is no longer Commissioner. But he’s now basically in Penguin’s pocket, and had to kill a guy to get back to his old job. It looks like in season 2, Jim Gordon will be taking a much darker path. Instead of trying to change Gotham by being better than it, he’s giving into the darkness of Gotham so that he can defeat it. And that means making deals with Penguin and crossing the line. I think they’ll come a point in season 2 where Jim does something so unrecognisable bad that he decides to change his ways and goes back onto the path of redemption.

gotham season 2 premiere barbara

But what about Jim Gordon’s old girlfriend Barbara? Well she’s in Arkham Asylum, which makes sense after she completely cracked last season. Barbara’s character has done a complete 180 from when we were first introduced to her on the show. I don’t believe this was always the path of her character, but rather something the writers decided to do because no one really liked her character.

In Arkham she bumps into Jerome. Jerome who may or may not be the Joker is a great character, but I would prefer for him not be the Joker. Keeping the mystery of what made the Joker be the way he is, is part of the character’s allure, so no need to ruin that.

After a bunch of the inmates are broken out, we find out what Theo Galavan’s plans are. Theo looks like he’s building his own little team of super-villains. Theo has been positioned as the major antagonist of season 2, and doesn’t originate from the comics so we’re not exactly sure what the path of his character will be yet. Gotham creator Bruno Heller said his character believes that to fix a city, he needs to destroy it in the first place. Some are speculating that he may be connected to Ra’s Al Ghul and the League of Assassins, as that’s something they like to do. But considering how recently Arrow used Ra’s, I’m not too sure about that. But it’ll be interesting to see what Barbara and Jerome do in season 2 with Theo, whatever it is, I’m sure it will be incredibly messed up.

gotham season 2 episode 1 breakdown penguin

Penguin continues being awesome, and is quickly becoming more like his comic book counterpart. Penguin is traditionally hungry for power and wealth, and is merciless but smart. We’re starting to see that. Penguin plays with Loeb enough to get him to retire, instead of getting too messy and killing him. We should continue to see Penguin’s rise to power in season 2, but I’m sure we’ll see some other powers rise that may try to topple him, like Theo.

And then you have Bruce. Bruce is at the stage of his life where he knows he wants to make the city better, but doesn’t know how to do it the right way. Bruce is so consumed by seeking vengeance for his parents’ murder, his sense of morality is being skewed. Which is clear by what he says to Gordon. In season 2 we’ll probably see a lot more character growth from Bruce. From a boy obsessed with vengeance, to someone who understands what justice is.

gotham season 2 episode 1 discussion bruce batcave

I am curious to find out what Thomas Wayne was up to before he was murdered. It’s clear that his death wasn’t random, somebody wanted him out-of-the-way, the question is why? We should see the birth of the World’s Greatest Detective in season 2, as Bruce tries to discover the truth.

Overall Gotham season 2 episode 1 showed us just how weird and messed up the show is. Once you get used to the fact that this isn’t like the canon Batman comics, and more like an elseworlds tale, you can get used to the dramatic character changes the show makes. Sure Gotham is a little quirky and ridiculous, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing, it’s just not what we’re used to from the Batman world recently (but something we saw in the Burton Batman film, which is a tone Gotham likes to reflect). Anyways definitely looking forward to what’s going to go down in Gotham season 2!

  1. I’m kinda glad they scaled back on some characters this season. Season 1 was overloaded with characters, some died whole others simply left, which kinda leaves me wondering what happened to Crispus Allen and Renee Montoya. I guess they’ll probably bring em back gradually instead of shoving them in all at once. But I definitely loved tonight’s episode and it illustrates what everyone is willing to do to get what they want. As for Barbara, I think they’re kinda taking a cue from the comics in the sense that, if Gotham has em getting back together (which would be weird given what’s happened), then James Jr. would be born and he inherits his insanity from his mom, though who knows if Gotham will get there if at all.

    • Yeah this season needs to be a lot more focused than last season. I cannot imagine how Barbara and Gordon could ever get back together again. But yeah, at least then it would make sense for them to have such a psychotic child

  2. I’m not impressed by what they did with Barbara. It reeks of laziness on the writers part. Instead of trying to salvage her, they just made her one-dimensionally evil because the fans hated her.
