The Case of Michael Shannon: What’s Zod doing in Batman v Superman??

Good old Michael Shannon continues to confuse the shit out of the internet with his latest comments surrounding what Zod will be doing in Batman v Superman. So let’s try to decipher his words the best we can!

So a few weeks ago we heard an interesting anecdote from Michael Shannon, where he recalled his experience on the set of Batman v Superman. He was stuck in the toilet, because he couldn’t open the door because of his so-called flipper hands. These comments spread all over the internet, as everyone scrambled to get any information on Batman v Superman.

Now we knew Zod would be popping up in the film because of the trailer, however we didn’t know anything much about his role. These comments basically solidified for the internet the biggest rumour that Zod’s body would be used to create Doomsday.

This week however Michael Shannon came out saying that he basically trolled the internet, and of course those comments weren’t real. He goes on to say:

“It’s a really awkward situation—I’m in the trailer for a movie that I didn’t work on. “The thing about the whole Krypton universe, apparently, is that even when you destroy them, there are ghosts. The first [film], Jor-El is there even though he’s been dead for lord knows how long. I went over and did some voice-over stuff because it’s like that ghost thing. But I don’t know if I’m supposed to say that. I get very nervous.”

First of all, we already know Michael Shannon was on set (or at least in very close proximity of the set as according to pictures) so it doesn’t exactly make any sense when he says he didn’t work on the movie. Which completely contradicts his next comments, talking about him being a ghost in the film. What????

There’s two main things that could have gone down here: Michael Shannon just told an innocent story about his time on set, not realising the repercussions. The WB assassins came after him and basically said, yo Shannon how ’bout you take those comments back. Now he’s backpedaling claiming he’s a ghost. By saying something weird like that, it just confuses everyone as to what is real and what’s not, helping to recreate some secrecy surrounding the film.

The alternative is that Shannon legitimately trolled the internet, but didn’t expect it to go that viral. Now he’s trolling the internet again talking about himself being a ghost, or he’s not trolling this time and is actually a ghost, who knows, the point is that he never had flipper hands to begin with.

Right now I’m not completely sure, but it is odd how detailed his anecdote was. I mean it’s a pretty random comment to make. I just think Shannon is a guy who doesn’t completely understand the nature of the internet community, and didn’t expect anyone to really take note of his flipper hands comments.

But of course we would take note of his flipper hands story.  Anything  anyone says from these major franchises is dissected and analysed. However our analysis of such comments often just result in a conclusion that we want to reach. In this case, of course the internet wants any piece of proof confirming the Doomsday rumours that have been floating around for a while, so when Shannon makes a weird comment about his flipper hands, damn right that means Doomsday is confirmed! That’s just the logic of the internet.

I guess it just goes to show how careful these actors need to be with their words. One off-hand comment could dominate headlines across the internet. And as we wait impatiently for Batman v Superman to come out, we’ll basically take anything we can get, even if that involves Michael Shannon’s bizarre flipper hands.

As for what Zod’s role in Batman v Superman actually is, right now it’s hard to tell. Lexcorp having his corpse suggests that they are either using it to help find Superman’s weaknesses (might lead to the discovery of Kryptonite), or will be used to create a new organism. Whether that organism is Doomsday or another character like Bizarro, we can’t be sure of yet.

Overall the moral of the story is to not take anything Michael Shannon says about his role in Batman v Superman too seriously.

  1. Honestly…I don’t care. The Flipper hands story was so funny in all its confusing glory. Otherwise…I honestly didn’t need the flipper hands to consider the possibility that they will somehow revive his character in one way or another.

  2. Not sure what Zod’s role in Batman v Superman will be, Doomsday would be an interesting twist, but I don’t think I’d take what said about the film Michael Shannon too seriously.

  3. I’ve always thought that Lex will use Zod’s body to create Bizarro, is just my theory. I think that is easier create Bizarro from Zod, than Doomsday, and even if Doomsday is the villain create from general Zod, I doubt that will be strong as in the comics, at least strong as much as it was Zod. In the Comic Con trailer, someone is shooting a laser against Batman and Doomsday hasn’t that power, but Bizarro has it. Or maybe there will be another type of creature but I’m glad that there’s still the mystery of the villain I hope they will keep the secret till next year.

    • Yeah Bizarro is kind of the second main theory. And it’s clear from that trailer it wasn’t Superman who shot at Batman like that so it makes sense for them to do a Bizarro type character.

  4. I just thought Zod in BVS was just a little reminder of Man of Steel. The whole Doomsday thing sounds dumb anyway and makes me wonder why DC wants to “deepen” him. They did that back in the 90s shortly after Death of Superman, no more “depth” needed. Then Smallville happened and I liked Sam Witwer’s version and that’s fine. Then DC gets stupid with Doomed and now there’s a comic called Doomed when it should be called Doomsday but whatever. Doomsday is simply the monster that killed Superman, nothing more.
