The Flash 1×15 Spoiler Discussion: Eobard Thawne and time travel (yupp)

the flash episode 15 reverse flash eobard thawne harrison wells revealedThe Flash episode 15 had so many heart attack moments, from the reveal of Harrison Wells aka Eobard Thawne aka Reverse Flash, to the ‘death’ of Cisco, to the Barry Allen/Iris West hook-up oh and a little time travel to top things off. This show knows what it’s doing, and knows how to do it well, so let’s discuss The Flash episode 15!

Okay first let’s get into the biggest, shocking moment of The Flash episode 15, the truth about Harrison Wells. Well my theory was wrong I can admit it, Harrison Wells isn’t Hunter Zolomon, but in fact Eobard Thawne. I’ll quickly recap who Eobard Thawne is in the comics (or you can read my Reverse Flash Theory post here). Eobard Thawne is from the 25th Century, and had a slight (crazy) obsession with the Barry Allen Flash of the past.

He tried to replicate the accident that caused Barry Allen to become The Flash, but accidentally sent himself back in time. There he learnt that he was destined to become ‘Professor Zoom’, the arch nemesis of The Flash, and was destined to die at the hands of The Flash. All this time travelling was too much for his brain to handle (understandable) and it drove him a little nuts, even making him believe he was Barry Allen. Interestingly enough Eobard Thawne even gets plastic surgery to look like Barry Allen, and I know I’m not the only one who thinks Harrison Wells looks like Barry Allen in the show. In the comics it is Thawne that kills Barry’s mother, and Iris West.

So what’s Harrison Wells’ motivations in the show? Well we’re still a little unclear on that. The Flash episode 15 revealed that Harrison went back in time to kill Barry, but accidentally ended up killing his mother. Because of that Harrison got stuck in time, and has been living the last 15 years in the past. He is now using Barry, training him to go as fast as he can, so that he can return to the future. But the question is, why did he want to kill Barry in the first place?

the flash episode 15 eobard thawneOkay so now we know Harrison Wells is Eobard Thawne, what about Eddie Thawne? Well as Harrison, or should we just call him Eobard now, mentioned, Eddie is a distant relative. So will Eddie take the path of Eobard as well? If you’ve seen the PaleyFest Flash sizzle reel, then you would have seen Eddie going a little evil. Now we don’t know the context of that situation, but Eddie could very well find a mentor in his evil relative. I still believe Eddie will become the Reverse Flash at some point in time.

Okay so another shocking moment of the episode was Dr Wells killing Cisco!! Whaaaat??? Well obviously he isn’t dead, but Wells did put his hand in his chest. Now I feel like doing that, screws up a person. As we know, in the comics Cisco is the hero known as Vibe, so maybe Wells’ vibrating hand in Cisco’s chest does something to get his powers, or something will happen, because you can’t be the same after something like that happens to you.

Then we have the big Barry Allen/Iris West moment. The pair have finally gotten together, yay? I don’t know, I still don’t fully buy Iris West (and also it’s pretty weird that she is kinda Barry’s sister), but I am glad she knows who he is. Because there’s nothing worse than the naive, stupid superhero girlfriend, who has no idea what’s going on.

the flash 35 panel future flashOf course that’s not all what happened to Barry in episode 15, he also traveled through time! Yayy Barry, look at him all grown up and time travelling. In the beginning of the episode we saw that while Barry was running, he saw himself beside him. That of course was the future version of himself that accidentally ended time travelling to the past. Barry doesn’t really understand the nature of the speed force yet, so I don’t even know if he will be able to get himself back to the future. But now that time travel is well and truly part of the show, it will be interesting to see what they do with it. However sometimes time travel stories can get a little whacky, so it’s important that they don’t get too carried away with all this time travel stuff.

And also now that Barry has traveled back in time before all these reveals, does this mean this entire episode didn’t even really happen??? I’m thinking that after tonight’s episode, The Flash episode 16 will redo this entire day, meaning no more dead Cisco and Harrison Wells reveals.

So to recap The Flash episode 15: Harrison Wells is Eobard Thawne, and is full evil. He wants to get back to the future, and is nobody’s friend (poor Cisco). And Barry has finally accomplished time travel.

Overall The Flash episode 15 was another terrific episode, that really embraced its comic book roots. This show continues growing, and giving us heart attack moments, which is great. The stakes are so high right now, I have no idea how they can top this momentum in season 2!

  1. Great review, and what a fun episode! So many big WTF revelations … that will be undone. Which is actually a good thing because I’ve grown to like Cisco a lot, his death will be prevented from happening somehow.

There was a lot of information, some parts I would actually like more clarification on. From what I’ve heard online, I think I know why he wanted to kill Barry as a kid, yet at the same time has worked to ensure Barry grows his powers. I’m already thinking ahead about how the writers could keep Wells around for next season as a regular character. The show wouldn’t be the same without him. 😀

    • Yeah well now that Barry has gone to the past, Cisco never died so problem solved haha
Well he helped to grow Barry’s powers because he needs to use Barry’s power to return to the future, as Barry is able to really tap into the Speed Force which Wells needs to travel through time.
I know, Wells needs to stay on the show, he’s so good!
