Batman Lego Movie: Is this Batman overload a good thing?

everything is batman lego movie

So unsurprisingly guess what movie Warner Bros are making…a Batman movie! But this time it won’t be live action, but instead it will be a spin-off to The Lego Movie, starring Will Arnett’s Batman. And just like I said in my previous post about Gotham, this is Batman’s world, and we’re just living in it. But is this a good thing? Is being inundated with Batman shit left right and centre something that I want? Is it something that we need?

Well it sure is what Warner Bros would want. The Batman franchise obvioulsy makes them a lot of money, it’s no shocker they would want to keep milking it. And if you read DC Comics then you know that they love milking Batman as well. Batman appears in many of the comics, and has many comics related to him as well. Let’s list the current ones shall we:

  • Batman
  • Batman Eternal
  • Detective Comics
  • Batman and Robin
  • Batman/Superman
  • Justice League
  • Gotham Academy
  • Arkham Manor
  • Gotham by Midnight
  • Batman ’66
  • The New 52: Future’s End

Probably forgot a few, but the point is that Batman is everywhere! And I love Batman I do, he is one of my favourite characters, but I am almost getting sick of his face. There is a plethora of other characters in the Dc Universe, but right now it seems as though they are sticking with the safe bet, and going with Batman when it comes to comic books, movies and tv shows. Speaking of tv shows, let’s list the Batman cartoon’s from the past couple of decades:

  • Batman: The Animated Series
  • The Adventures of Batman and Robin
  • The New Batman Adventures
  • Batman Beyond
  • The Batman
  • Batman: The Brave and the Bold
  • Beware the Batman

And of course he was in Justice League and Justice League: Unlimited, showing once again that Batman is everywhere!

So I say we are definitely getting a Batman overload whether we like it or not. From a business perspective it makes sense. People love Batman! And why wouldn’t you, he is a psychologically disjointed man who is also a total badass, and is actually a human! He makes money because at the end of the day people still want to see him. I mean I will have a little whinge that everything is Batman, but I’m still going to see everything Batman related because I love that crazy guy!

But at the same time I think Dc and WB need to slowly relax on all the Batman stuff they’re churning out and turn their heads to other characters. Because right now they seem to be putting a lot of eggs in Batman’s basket, and that isn’t the best thing to do. They should aim to create the next Batman! Take some other Dc character who isn’t as popular and make him as popular as The Bats. Look at what Marvel did with Iron Man. Iron Man can now crank out billion dollar movies, and he sure didn’t have the same popularity level Batman did.

So I guess what I’m trying to say is that I don’t mind this Batman overload too much, but I think it’s time to start exploring some different characters. And I know Warner Bros is already doing that which is great. We got a show about Green Arrow, a show about The Flash and a show about Constantine (and you know a show about Gotham but what ever), I’m glad they are willing to explore these characters that aren’t Batman, because there is a lot to love about these other characters as well.

So what do you think? Are you over the Batman overload? And what other characters do you want to see get some more love by Dc and WB? Let me know!

  1. Okay, as a non-batman fan I actually am really excited for this adaption for the character. I think it covered a lot of the basic flaws I think Batman has and I would like to see him a bit more comical. I think though, DC has so much more properties that are not developed enough. It’s amazing to see how Marvel is getting the upper hand on everything. I never thought I would see the day a Deadpool movie would be in development before a Deathstroke film. It almost makes me worried about a possible Justice League movie, because I don’t see enough the company having faith in these characters. Hope they begin to change a bit and start reinventing themselves!

    • you’re not a batman fan! 😮 haha just kidding but yeah it is good to see this version of Batman as well. Hopefully they do develop different characters, and obviously Marvel has the upper hand with developing different characters because their properties are spread out over 3 different movie studios, but still DC do need to look at different characters, so hopefully when they finally announce those 9 untitled DC/WB movies it will be characters we haven’t seen on the big screen yet

      • Okay let me reiterate I am a recovering batman fan haha I at one point was obsessed with batman and I consider many stories masterpieces: The Killing Joke (Which superb job on your post on my favorite portion of the story :)), Returns & Strikes Again, Year One, Hush, and The Long Halloween. Yeah I am just wondering if they are going to go the distance. I want to see them go nuts and make some of the more bizarre adaptations like Plastic Man (which was at one point in consideration).

  2. The moment that Will Arnett’s Batman appeared in the LEGO movie, I was laughing so hard, and immediately prayed to the Bat-Gods, “make a solo movie of this you bastards!”
